HALEAKALA TEMPERATURES, ELEVATIONS, HIKING DISTANCES

Haleakala National Park encompasses the upper slopes of the Haleakala volcano, with its subalpine cinder desert and rainforest areas, and stretches down the southeast flank of the volcano to the Kipahulu coastline.

Temperatures often drop into the 30's at night; daytime highs may reach 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Freezing rain, dense cloud cover and high winds are common any month of the year, but especially in the winter and spring.

Three trails enter the Haleakala wilderness: Sliding Sands, Halemau'u and the rugged Kaupo trail.

Guide books and topographic maps may be ordered from Hawai'i Natural History Association, Box 464, Makawao, HI 96768.
